What My Work is About
The inner lives of men are more complicated than our culture makes them seem. My practice, my writing, and the work I do exist to inhabit that complexity, honestly and without oversimplifications.

Background & Training
I started my career wanting to be a journalist. I studied at the University of Michigan and went on to earn dual master's degrees from Columbia University: one in journalism, one in psychology. The two disciplines turned out to have more in common than I expected. Both depend on paying close attention to what people are actually saying, rather than what they're supposed to be saying.
After completing my doctorate in clinical psychology at Adelphi University’s Derner Institute, I trained at the Manhattan Veterans Affairs Hospital through NYU, working with men whose struggles had compounded for years before anyone put a name to them. That experience sharpened my clinical instincts and reinforced something I've believed ever since: the men who most need help are often the last ones to ask for it.
Clinical Work & Approach
My clinical approach is built upon modern psychodynamic theory, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Emotionally Focused therapy (EFT) for couples. I supervise doctoral students and consult with organizations through Work Haven, working with leaders (coaching, workshops), managing high-pressure careers without losing the rest of themselves in the process.
Writing, Teaching & Projects
My book, Quiet Your Mind: A Men's Guide (Penguin Random House), grew directly out of clinical work. The strategies in it were developed and refined over years of sitting with men who were trying to outrun their own minds. I write the Souls of Men column for Psychology Today and frequently provide commentary to media and appear as a guest on podcasts offering expert insight into fatherhood and the male mind.
I'm the Director of the US launch of Men's Therapy Hub (Summer 2026), a platform advancing access to mental health care for men. I co-host its podcast, No Man's an Island. I develop and deliver continuing education courses through PESI/Psychotherapy Networker focused on building working alliances with male clients.
Personal
I play ice hockey (way past my prime), play multiple instruments, and am a father of daughters. These are not unrelated to the work!
